Metal mesh bags were popular in the 1920s and 1930s when machine technology enabled their mass production. Women brought these bags to dances because they were light and easily portable. This bag has a metal loop which was worn around the wrist or arm whilst dancing. The mesh bag belonged to Mabel Martens, the granddaughter of Edwin Tessensohn, a prominent Eurasian in Singapore. Mabel attended dances from the age of 15 or 16 years old. These dances included a Christmas dance that happened yearly in the Victoria Memorial Hall, and dances in the Europe, Raffles and Adelphi hotels.
