Gem-set Chinese Porcelain for Turkish Market

This porcelain bowl has a dark, brownish-red glaze, engraved and inlaid with a lattice of gold wire and gilt copper floral mounts set with emeralds. The bowl is of Chinese origin while the jewelled decorations were added on in Ottoman Turkey. It is believed that this style of decoration on porcelain was done by palace artisans in Istanbul. Chinese porcelain was much admired and was imported in large quantities to the Ottoman palace from the 16th century onwards. The foot of the bowl has the four characters: chang ming fu gui (long life and wealth).
