This purse which is shaped like a modified pocket is created using bead embroidery. This is a technique where beads are sewn onto a base fabric, usually velvet with the support of an embroidery frame or ‘pidangan’. The beads used here are mostly white, grey and brown in colour. They are spheroid (compressed at the sides) in shape and form line patterns on the piece. They are known as ‘seed beads’ or ‘Rocaille beads’. The opening of the purse is controlled by a metal clasp. The more sombre colours on this purse and the absence of a loop where a belt can be placed through suggests that this piece had a more functional, everyday use.
