Curtain tie backs are made up of two separate pieces of embroideries sewn together. The upper section of this piece is created using raised silk thread embroidery. Motifs of flowers adorn this section. The lower section is created using bead netting, one of the techniques used in Peranakan beadwork. A surface of beads is created by inserting single or multiple threads through them to form a unified structure. This piece uses glass seed beads of various colours to create a pair of peony flowers set against a pink background. Bead tassels hang from the bottom of each piece. Curtain tie backs were common in the bridal chamber. This piece is decorated with the auspicious motif of the peony flower, which symbolises wealth and prosperity. Peonies also represent spring, which is considered an auspicious time for marriage.
