The elongated nose on this mask is related to the myth about the creation of the land and Sepik area. The man who killed the crocodile (who had given birth to him) was so remorseful that he cried for months that his nose became long. The protruding tongue is also a feature common to masks of the area. The mask was not meant to be worn on the face but attached to the woven costume.
