Instrument of Appointment presented to David Marshall on his appointment as Chief Minister by Governor John Nicoll

The first meeting of the Council of Ministers was scheduled on 6 April 1955. The meeting was preceded by a solemn swearing-in ceremony conducted by the Chief Justice and attended by the Labour Front ministers, Governor Sir John Nicoll, Chief Secretary W.A.C. Goode, Financial Secretary T.M. Hart and Attorney-General E.J. Davies. Marshall wore a bush jacket to this formal occasion as a symbol of protest against imperial domination.
