Now commonly known as the Padang, the Esplanade was a popular recreational area to enjoy cricket, rugby and evening strolls. The road on the left was known as New Esplanade Road. However, in 1907 it was renamed Connaught Drive by the Municipal Council to commemorate the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught to Singapore.
