This seated figure appears to be holding a fan and chewing miang or fermented tea, a custom in northern North-central Thailand at this time. The piece was made in Si Satchanalai, one of the twin royal cities in the Sukhothai period from the mid 13th to the mid 15th century. Kilns in this region were some of the largest ceramic producers in Southeast Asia at this time.
