This glazed porcelain figurine of a Chinese man dressed in loose robes is modelled with a smiling face and an expressive body language. The hands and legs of this figurine are partially broken. Found with a sizable cargo of Chinese export ceramics and porcelain uncovered from a late 17th century shipwreck near Vung Tau, Vietnam, figurines such as this are unique and no comparable pieces has yet been found. It is not known if they had a specific function or were simply decorative pieces, or if they were meant for the Asian or European market.
