This sculpture shows the technical expertise of Pala sculptors. Vairocana is associated with the sun, and is at the centre of the five Dhyana Buddhas in the cosmic mandala. He represents the “blissful body” of the historical Buddha, and is sometimes called the Supreme Buddha. He also represents the Buddhist concept of emptiness. He is identified by the hand gesture he makes.
