This painting shows Rama, Lakshmana and Sita going into the forest to begin their 14 year exile. Having crossed the Ganges river, they are heading to Prayaga to settle at Chitrakoot.Madhubani painting is a style of Indian painting practiced in the Mithila region of Bihar. This painting was probably used to decorate a 'kohbar' (bridal chamber). Paintings such as this one were developed by the women of Mithila who painted marriage scenes of Rama and Sita. Incidentally, Sita came from Mithila and the women of Mithila still remember her story through these paintings and folk songs.
