This celadon vase is inspired by the archaic jade cong, a square tube with a central, circular hole. It is covered with a green glaze that resembles those of Longquan wares, produced during the Song (960-1279) and Ming (1368-1644) periods in Zhejiang province. Archaic shaped vessels were collected and admired by the scholar-connoisseurs of the Song dynasty and were handed down as heirlooms. The green glazes of Longquan wares were admired for their jade-like qualities.
