Circumcision is an important rite of passage for most Muslim males. It is usually performed on a boy when he is between 7 to 12 years old, and in most societies, it signifies the attainment of adulthood status. Although not mentioned in the Qur’an, circumcision is considered sunnah (in accordance to the traditions of the Prophet). In some societies, the word for circumcision is derived from the word sunnah – sunnet in Turkish and sunat in Malay. This instrument was used to hold the foreskin. Circumcision is a practice that Islam shares with Judaism.
