A pair of orange André Courrèges Hyperbole matelot trousers

Born in 1923, French designer André Courrèges abandoned an engineering career to become a couturier, joining the house of Balenciaga in 1949. He left to start his own design house in 1961. Courrèges drew his inspiration from menswear and appropriated various styles to create functional pieces for the modern woman. Labelled the ‘Space Age’ designer, he is best known for his uncluttered and futuristic creations, which were defined by geometric shapes such as squares, triangles and trapezoids, accessorised with boots and goggles. The Hyperbole line was a range of lower-priced ready-to-wear collection targeted at younger clients. It was launched in 1971.
