Temple cloth

This temple cloth also known as a 'pidan' is woven with weft (horizontal) ikat designs in yellow, white, red and green on a black ground. The motifs consist of apsaras (heavenly female attendants) bearing torches, pagodas and royal three-tiered umbrellas. Temple cloths of this kind were used as temple decorations, for example as hangings on the ceiling above Buddha images, in religious festivals. In woven cloth, the warp is the set of lengthwise yarns attached to the loom and the weft is the yarn which is woven back and forth, across the warp, to create the woven fabric.
