Pair of Vishnu ear ornaments

This pair of ear ornaments features flame-like motifs which are said to be symbols of the god Vishnu. Indo-Javanese period ornaments such as this pair frequently take on forms inspired by Hindu-Buddhist iconography such as the lotus, Kala and Hanuman figures. The level of technical sophistication reached its peak in this period, during which a combination of lost wax casting and goldwork produced objects with incredible detailing. The boldness and sculptural quality of these pieces make up some of the most unique features of Indonesian goldwork from this period. In Indonesia, the influx of Indian aesthetic and religious ideas reached its peak from the 9th to 14th centuries. Prior to this, gold objects were already being fashioned, but Javanese jewellery from the Indo-Javanese period is highly complex in form, indicating a major departure from the geometric forms of earlier periods.
