This olive-green glazed dish is decorated with freely incised floral motifs. It is a celadon ware which refers to Chinese ceramics with a high-fired green glaze coloured with small amounts of iron oxide. Celadons appear in a range of colours, depending on the glaze components and firing conditions. The term 'celadon' may have originated from the name of a character in a 17th century French play, who wore a green costume.
