This lead-glazed or ‘sancai’ (‘three colour’) double-gourd shaped vase is decorated with streaks of dark green and amber glaze. The three-colour technique grew out of the monochrome lead glazes of the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE). This type of glaze includes brown, blue, green and cream tones which were combined or used on their own.
