Hup Huat Paper Products (合发纸业) metal plate for letterpress printing

The metal plate is carved with Chinese text and images of a dragon and a phoenix. The Chinese text indicates the address of Hup Huat Paper Products, auspicious sayings and the goods they sell, including their role as agent for the red and white cotton twist string from China. The company was established in 1942 and was formerly known as Chop Hup Huat Paper Bags Manufacturer. The business is run by the Ho family, who previously had their shop in Duxton Road before moving to its present location at Silat Avenue. In the 1980s, the brothers who had taken over the business from their father decided to focus on supplying paper as well as red and white twine, rather than making paper bags, as the latter proved unprofitable. The metal plates attest to the change in the business nature, name and location of the shop.
