Johnston’s Pier was named after Alexander Laurie Johnston, one of the earliest European settlers in Singapore and a friend of Sir Stamford Raffles. The pier stood opposite Fullerton Square and was completed in March 1856. The building of a pier, for the convenient arrival and departure of sea travellers, was first suggested during the Municipality meeting of 20 July 1853. In its time, many famous dignitaries, including British Royalty and other VIPs, took their first step into Singapore on this pier. This photograph shows the pier with its sheltered landing and departure platform in its earlier days. By the 1890s, in response to increasing traffic, the pier was entirely sheltered for protection against the elements.
