Pair of Phoenix hairpins

These two hairpins in the form of phoenixes would have been part of an elaborate wedding headdress worn by Peranakan brides in Palembang, Sumatra. Phoenixes, particularly pairs of male and female birds would have been symbolic of the core Chinese concept of yin and yang, representing balance and harmony. This would have been an important message in relation to a wedding and the union of a couple in marital partnership.
