This beaded panel uses threads in a technique known as the Peking knot and metallic thread couching. There is also a beadwork fringe that runs on one length of the panel. The panel contains motifs of pheasants, peonies and squirrels, some of which are auspicious symbols in the Chinese culture. Phoenixes symbolised virtue while peonies represented beauty and wealth. Emblems of the legendary Eight Immortals form the border motif of this piece. These were characters in Chinese mythology who had the power to give life and destroy evil. These decorative and ornamental panels were commonly displayed around the Peranakan house, especially during festive occasions.
