During the Japanese Occupation, the local population in Singapore found it prudent to learn the language of the military occupiers to avoid misunderstandings. Although the occupiers initially allowed the use of English, they later became more insistent on replacing it with Japanese in an attempt to wipe out all western colonial influences. This dictionary belonged to a local Chinese and it was probably of invaluable assistance in helping him learn the Japanese language.
