Originally called the Plain, the Esplanade was later renamed Padang, which means 'a recreational or sports ground' in Malay. Both English and Indian troops had their quarters here after the founding of modern Singapore, a time where the area was still covered with a low jungle and populated by a few huts near the shoreline.
