Originally called the Plain, the Esplanade was later renamed Padang, which means 'a recreational or sports ground' in Malay. Both English and Indian troops had their quarters here after the founding of colonial Singapore, a time where the area was still covered with a low jungle and populated by a few huts near the shoreline. Because of its proximity to the Supreme Court and various government offices, the Padang also served, apart from sports and recreation, the political function of hosting the Queen’s Birthday Parades, World War Two victory parade, political rallies and after Independence, National Day parades.
