Sir Stamford Raffles had appointed a Town Committee to draw up a detailed city plan for Singapore and, according to the plan, the southwestern part of town had been selected for the Chinese in 1822. This area came to be known as Chinatown. Most of the ‘jinricksha’, or rickshaw, pullers lived in tiny cubicles in this area, just off South Bridge Road.
