A view of Tyersall Mansion from the Botanic Gardens

The present Botanic Gardens was established by the local Agri-Horticultural Society in 1859 on land donated by Hoo Ah Kay, also known as Whampoa. Initially, it had been established in 1822 at Fort Canning by Sir Stamford Raffles, however, it was eventually disbanded. In 1874, it was officially opened to the public. In the background, a view of Tyersall Mansion can be seen.
