This advertisement was for a Chinese opera performance that was going to be staged in New World. Open-air theatres gradually lost their appeal with the emergence of amusement parks such as New World, Gay World and Great World, which provided alternative venues for Chinese opera shows and other forms of entertainment that were held throughout the first half of the 20th century. Apart from religious celebrations, opera performances were also held to commemorate special social occasions, such as this particular show, which was to celebrate the 79th anniversary of a Chinese clan association.
