This is a photograph of a Peranakan lady, otherwise known as a 'Nyonya'. Peranakans, or the Straits Chinese, were Chinese immigrants who had assimilated the Malay language and customs into their lives over time. While the ladies are known as 'Nyonya', older women are called 'Bibiks'.
