The General Post Office was built in 1874 in Commercial Square or what is known today as Raffles Place. Its function was mainly to facilitate the mailing transactions of the business community. Later, a savings bank was added for the general public as the majority of the population living in Singapore only had the corner exchange shop or pawnshop to rely upon in times of difficulty.
