This ewer is a good example of a typical Tang ceramic shape. The characteristics are the globular body with high shoulders, flaring rolled rim, ribbed handle and stump spout. It was a utilitarian ware which may have been later used as 'mingqi' or burial ware.Suffused bluish white and lavender glaze decoration is siad to have developed from the informal lead-glazed pottery style. This type of glaze decoration follows from the tradition of black wares. It is said that perfectly glazed balck wares are rare. Often the glaze is mottled black or an even blackish brown.Splashed blackwares were made at several kilns in Henan, Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces. The bluish splashes produced by brushing wood-ash onto the pot are the earliest example of the glaze effect known as 'liquid-liquid phase separation' found in later glazes such as the Song-Jun wares.
