This photograph shows Raffles Library (then part of the Raffles Library and Museum) before it became the National Museum in 1969. By the first decade of the 20th century, the library had 30,000 volumes and a comprehensive collection on the Malay Archipelago. Subscribers included colonial officials, academics and professionals, as well as a few members of the educated Asian elite.
