This intricate talismanic disc from Banten in Northeast Java is known as a kawari. It was probably part of an elaborate necklace or chest piece. It is decorated using the applique technique. Applique is a technique which calls for small, pre-shaped pieces of metal to be soldered onto a metal base. This allowed the craftsman to build up more complex and detailed decorations.
