This is a motion paper filed in June 1885 by Alfred Henry Drew, the solicitor for the plaintiff, The New Harbour Dock Company Limited, in the suit against the defendant Mayna Payna Reena Vellyappa Chitty. Drew filed for an injunction to restrain the defendant from selling or putting up for sale by himself or his agents the five brick pillars, planks, partitions, and filed roofed houses situated at New Harbour Road Pulau Hantu Municipal No. 239, 240, 241, 242, and 243. This document is part of a collection of legal documents from the 19th and early 20th centuries which provides a glimpse into the work of the notable personalities who left their mark on Singapore’s legal history, and the economic and other transactions undertaken by ordinary immigrants in 19th century Singapore that tell stories of misfortune and indebtedness which would otherwise have disappeared from history.
