Coastal view of Tanjong Katong

This is a coloured postcard depicting a coastal view of Tanjong Katong in the early 1900s.Tanjong Katong means ‘turtle point’ in Malay. Katong was the name for a species of sea turtle that is now extinct. In the early 20th century, Tanjong Katong was a popular seaside holiday destination for affluent Europeans and businessmen from the local Chinese and Eurasian communities. Exclusive recreation clubs and villas for weekend retreats could be found along the coast. Tanjong Katong was also where the Sea View Hotel was situated. Established in 1906, it was one of the first hotels located outside of the busy town centre and was especially popular with guests seeking the tranquillity of an idyllic seaside resort surrounded by coconut trees. The hotel had a pier at the beachfront and guests could travel from Johnston’s Pier in town to the hotel. Originally owned by Reuben Manasseh Meyer, the hotel was leased to various operators until 1962, when it was demolished and a new property bearing the same name was built in its place.
