This hand-coloured wood engraving titled ‘Blowing up of the Johore Iron Paddle Steamer off Singapore’ appeared in the Illustrated London News. The original illustration was sent by correspondent John Lawrence Kirby, who was stationed in Singapore. The ill-fated iron steam-vessel ‘Johore’ was owned by the Temenggong of Johor.
