This is one half of a silk satin ‘sam kun’, which consists of a top or ‘sam’ with side fastenings and a mandarin collar, as seen here. The ‘sam’ is worn over a flared skirt (‘kun’). It was worn by Si Jing at her wedding dinner (see 2002-00863-071 and 073) in 1952. Si Jing (the pen name of Ng Soo Lui) was a prolific female writer in the Chinese community. Born in Singapore in 1934, she has written extensively on her childhood and life in Chinatown. Si Jing and her husband, Huang Da Li, held their 17-table wedding banquet at the Great Southern Hotel.
