As the centre of the Malay film industry, Singapore attracted talents from Malaya. These included S. Roomai Noor from Pahang and Ummi Kalthoum from Negeri Sembilan. In 1956, Roomai Noor became the first Malay director at Cathay–Keris Films with his film Adam.
