The Board of Commissioners of Currency Malaya was formed in 1938 under the recommendation of the Appointed State Secretary for the Colonies, Sir Basil Blackett, and was given the power to issue currency in 1939. Currency notes in denominations ranging from one cent to ten thousand dollars were printed in Britain and bore the image of King George VI.
