This fortnightly pictorial was dedicated to Straits sportsmen in Malaya and Singapore. Sportsman Magazine was an official publication of weightlifting in Malaya. The cover page usually featured weightlifting award medallists and event participants, promoting the sport as an ideal way to attain a good physique. Some issues also included supplements on other special sports events such as football matches held in the Straits. In 1960, three decades after the first volume of Sportsman Magazine was published, Singapore produced her first Olympics medallist, Tan Howe Liang. The event that earned him a silver medal was coincidentally the weightlifting event.
