Fisherman's boxes such as these were known as ‘kotak ke laut’ and were commonly used by fishermen to store small items such as fishing tackle. The design of the drawers meant that they could be closed extremely tight so that other items such as tobacco and matches remain dry. The body of most were carved from a single block of wood so that they would not come apart at the seams over time.
