This batik fragment probably used as a banner, features the repeated motif of a typical three-tier Indonesian mosque. The tiered roof mosque (usually odd number tiers) was widely found in island Southeast Asia. This form of mosque architecture was known in Java as early as the 16th century, and its form is found in Malaysia as well as southern Philippines. Today, Southeast Asian mosques tend to reflect more West Asian and Indian influences in their architecture.
