Born in Singapore in 1955, Lim Tiong Ghee is a self-taught artist renowned for his abstract collages. He was Category Winner (Representational), UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 1984 with his ‘Reflection’ watercolour painting, and in 1989 Lim received the Competition’s Top Award for his wrapping paper collage ‘From the Turtledove’.An admirer of Cultural Medallion recipient Goh Beng Kwan – an artist whose name is synonymous with the advent and development of collage and mixed media abstract art in Singapore, Lim's artistic development in the collage technique likewise reveals a sensitivity to textures that project the lusty ambience of tropical climates. Many of Lim’s textural marks are achieved during the paper dying process – he will experiment by bringing into contact different colour sheets while still wet. The contact made will leave stains and marks, or blend colours, giving the artists unique papers to collage with.
