Belt and buckle

This 'tali pinggang' (belt) features a strap with decorated with floral designs and a rounded ogival ‘pending’ (belt buckle) from Borneo. The pending is elaborately decorated with floral, fish, crab and bird motifs and features a central medallion of a female figure dressed in ancient costume, flanked by two ducks. Various metalwork techniques such as repoussé—in which designs are hammered into sheet metal—engraving and chasing were used to fashion the pending. The strap of the belt has two embossed panels decorated with floral designs at both ends and the strap features a diamond motifs outlined by embellished small flowers. From the elaborate designs and motifs of this set, it was most likely worn by the Peranakan Chinese women in Borneo.
