This ivory penbox is finely carved with a dense pattern of floral motifs. The cover opens to reveal a tray, which is divided into three compartments which were used to store pens. There are also three small rectangular openings on the side for inkwells. Islamic calligraphers and scribes strived to use the best available materials and tools to produce their works and this artefact is a fine example of that.
