Qi Baishi's (1864-1957) style defies categorisation. His style stood out for its strong connection with folk art. His compositions are usually simple and possess a strong graphic quality. Besides flowers and still life, Qi also painted landscapes and many small creatures such as prawns, frogs, rats and insects. Qi's impoverished and humble beginnings allowed him to identify with the seemingly weak and small. Here, Qi displays his ability in executing both the 'xieyi' and 'gongbi' styles of painting. The detailed depiction of the insects contrasts with the free and exuberant handling of the lotus leaves and flower.Gongbi style refers to a technique in Chinese painting that requires meticulous brushstrokes and attention to details while xieyi refers to free hand brushwork.
