Betel leaf holder

This elaborate betal-leaf holder is known as 'kun-daung'. It consists of a tray that has a stupa-shaped open-work carving in the centre surrounded by four leaf-like protusions, also in open-work. This is a form unique to Burmese betel culture and is used specifically for presenting betel leaves. It is embellished with thayo (lacquer putty) work covered with goldleaf and inlaid mirror fragments.
