This pair of granary jars is covered in 'Qingbai' glaze, so called because of the characteristic icy, bluish-white glaze. Chinese characters for Sun and Moon are inscribed on them in underglaze iron-brown.The Sun jar has applied decoration in the form of a dragon, two figures, a duck and a bird. The Moon jar has a tiger, two figures and a dog.Qingbai wares were developed during the Song dynasty (960-1279), in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province. They were exported in large quantities to Southeast Asia from the 12th century onwards although pieces such as these were usually made for the domestic market.
