This brooch features a foreign coin dated 1900 with a flowery frame. The use of foreign currency on jewellery, flaunting the wearer’s wealth, took the form of 'kerosang' (set of brooches on blouse) and pendants. By the mid 20th century, coins were counterfeited for use in jewellery only. Nonyas (Peranakan women) were fond of jewellery, which was worn as a display of wealth especially on ceremonial occasions. Aside from brooches, their accessories include bracelets, anklets, earrings, belts and buckles, rings, pendants and hairpins.
