These gold ear ornaments were made by rolling a gold strip into an arch which terminates in inward spirals. Such double spiral motif was already used in jewellery dating back to before the Common Era in island Southeast Asia. The double spiral motif continues to appear widely across the archipelago, particularly in tribal societies such as the Batak and Nias.
